Help restoring saved files after a computer crash

I recently suffered a computer crash and lost my main hard drive data. My runtimes were all stored on externals as were the saved files from the various projects that I have done over the years. The only content that I am certain of losing were the files associated with DAZ that *must* be stored/saved/installed on the main hard drive with the program.

That said - I have my computer back up and running again, have reinstalled DS - but when opening my saved files, they load empty and I receive an error message.

I know there is a way to restore them, but I can't remember what the process is.

Many of these files are from projects that I have been working on for many years now (since DS1, transferred, updated, etc, etc) and are part of a commercial project that I can in no way rebuild from scratch at this point. Any help refreshing my memory to get these back to working order (and I know this isn't a simple process, I just can't for the life of me remember how to do it), I would be eternally grateful.

What is the error message? Do you have your content directories set up correctly (can you load content into new scenes)?

Building new scenes isn't an issue. Everything loads fine, but nothing I have worked on previously will load properly. My runtime itself was intact and didn't get deleted in the crash because it was on an external hard drive (same drive name, etc). The only content that was lost was on the C drive, the other drives weren't affected in the crash.

The log file is going nuts over the data folder, listing everything in the scene - morphs and all. The only stuff that I *know* I installed on the main drive is Genesis related, but none of this was. These are mostly V4 and runtimes built over the past 6 years. Always stored on the same drive.

I vaguely recall having to rebuild parts of the data folder on an earlier project, but it was nothing this serious or involved...

That's an older format .daz file. Any imported content (which includes Poser-format content) would ahve been converted and saved to the Data folder in the content diectory you saved to (if you did save to a content directory) or to the first Daz Studio Format content directory. I suspect you weren't saving to a mapped folder, and that the fist DS format directory was on your C: drive - if so then your options are limited as DS has not been able to save to .daz (and associated formats such as .dso) for some time. If you do still have an older version of DS, roughly contemporaneous with the saved scene, you could try reloading the base Poser files and saving to regenerate the needed Data folder entries.

I do still have a copy of DS3, and a lot of these older files were built pre DS4 - which is the issue.

Am I right in thinking that basically everything in the scene needs to be reloaded and saved? Does that include mats and morphs as well? (Kinda the morphs I'm concerned about). Some things in these scenes will load, others won't. We're talking literally hundreds of files - some I'm a lot less worried about than others (and use the same items, so loading/saving them once for the data folder should do the trick for the rest - if I recall correctly).

The geometry needs to be reloaded and saved - so the base figures and props, with morphs injected. Specific shapes (as long as they don't inject custom morphs), materials, poses, lights etc. are not needed - they are simply stored as settings or references in the scene file. So the starting point would be to load your usual figures, make sure they havea  full set or morphs, and save, then do the same for commonly used clothes, hair, and props, and see what is still throwing errors after that.

    Thank you :)

I don't seem to be having any trouble loading anything, and (for the most part) it seems to just be V4 that's giving me issues. I've loaded a few files and she's the only thing not showing. At this point I'm deleting the log files as I go to see what *doesn't* load and trying to find it - but things seem closer than they were to being restored at least!

Hmmmm v4, I remember that nightmare lol. Meybe you did what I did, and saved a copy of V4 with all the morphs you always use so you didn't have to inject a bajillion things to start? Just something that popped into my head.

I'm sure I have one somewhere, lol. I'm just not sure which ones I'm missing. I'll definitely be saving it again when all this is done though. Today was a bust, but getting everything back has been a chore for certain!

    Alright...now I am stumped...

I have loaded V4 and every morph I can find. Saved it. Nothing.
I'm still receiving the same error and the log still states that it can't find it. There's no path attached to the morph locations.

Guess I'm spending the day completely deleting and reinstalling everything I have for V 4 - even though she loads perfectly without errors from my runtime?
    I'm confused as heck crying
