Updating base mesh with new grouping

I want to transfer a weight mapped rig from one version of a mesh to another updated version with updated groups. I've done this before but for the life of me I can't remember how to do it. Everything I've tried doesn't recognise the new groups, only the old or no groups at all.
Any suggestions?

You are using Edit>Figure>Geometry>Update base Geometry? And there have been no chnages other than the grouping?
The vert order won't be identical due to how it was exported. That said as the vert count is the same update base geo seems to work, albeit with screwed up weight mapping obviously, but it drops the groups completely.
I don't need a perfect update, transfering the rigging will be good enough. Transfer utility seems to handle the weight mapping perfectly fine but won't allow any grouping but the original, it's the old or nothing. Unless I'm getting teh setting wrong of course...
You should be able to export and work on the model without chnaging the vertex order - what route are you using?
Yes but the question is how do I get the mesh back in with DAZ recognising the renewed groups? Whether the vert order is correct or not, and I have tried with the correct order, DS drops the groups via the figure -> geometry -> update base geometry option. The mapping and rig still work but as this makes body parts unselectable this defeats the point of what I want to do.
Okay found the issue, DS obj parser is just very basic in this context. It seems to be reading 'g lCollar Arms', the 'Arms' entry being a Maya set for reference, as a compete entry rather than two seperate groups and dropping the Arms part when it can't find a match.
The space is a separator in OBJ, not an allowed character in a name.
