Any way to separate geometry from a DUF so it can be modified and still load?

Simple enough concept: the separate OBJ geometries in Poser make it simple to modify the geometry of the object without having to recreate the whole object. It seems like this is discouraged by the DUF/DSF concept. I have Forbidden Whisper's "Gentlemen's Club" - I want to separate the materials so a wall that includes windows isn't one material, but "wall" and "windows." I also want to remove the 'lamplight' geometry so I can use geometry that actually looks like a bulb, not a souffle. Is my only choice to export the wall as an OBJ, modify it, then save it as a new prop? And if I want to further modify it, that same process again, instead of just opening geometry, modifying it, and saving the geometry alone?

Just use the geometry editor. You can create new surfaces using the selected polygons, and assign polygons to them afterwards. If you hide polygons you can then delete them easily enough. Then save as an asset.
Alternately you can use the utility DSF Toolbox by Dimension 3D to convert dsf to obj along with many other options. All in all a great utility for dealing with dsf files.
