Secluded Island Too Dark and Hogging Memory

Secluded Island is beautiful, but it hogs a LOT of memory; II have to click the eye icon next to it to get anything done with the characters. Anyone else? Also, trying to put an Iray sky above Secluded Island, but it comes out WAAAY too dark. It was suggested on Facebook that I make the sky an emissive surface, but that makes it even darker! Suggestions? (I'd attach the pic, but there's a nipple in it.)

If the Iray Sky is an HDRI, you can adjust the light output (Render Settings>Environment> Environment Intensity (or Environment Map, I typlically use Environment Intensity). From your description, I suspect it's not actually an Iray HDRI but rather a 3DL skydome. The 3DL Skydome will cut off external light.
Also make sure your Iray Environment Mode is NOT set to Scene Only (use Dome and Scene or Dome only as needed).
Well, I picked up First Light Skydome and HDRI, and I've been sweating over it for a couple of hours. Did everything you said, use dome and scene, then tried dome only, and now all I'm getting is solid black. What am I doing wrong? I knew enough not to pick the 3DL options, thanks to you, but WHY IS IT BLACK?
What do you have your tone mapping settings at? You might want to crank up the ISO a few hundred and or or lower the f-stop and see if that helps. Dome and scene is probably the right setting for the environment, at least that is what I usually use on outdoor renders.
**SOLVED**
Yes, it works! turns out only one setting in Easy Environments First Light Morning and Sky (a store I'm gonna be using a LOT more of) was Iray. So I applied that, cranked up the environment intensity, and from what I've seen so far-- only 62% done after three hours -- it's the most beautiful goshdarn outdoor scene I've ever done. THANKS ALL OF YOU!
I'd show it here, but there's one of those goshdarn nipples again.
Glad to hear you got it working :)
FWIW to other readers, a little more detail about the First Light HDRI package from Flipmode. colinmac2 is corect int that the procduct structure is a bit confusing in the lbrary. There is only one choice for Iray but several other similar appearing and sounding icons for 3DL. It's further confusing if you have Flipmode's Tree of Life. In that case the First light HDRI will load into the Tree of Life folder.
The First Light Iray HDRI uses an icon that says RENDER. That will load the enironment map. Everything else is 3DL (lights, prop, skysphere, etc.
When you load a scene in the DS there will be visibled all objects, these objects are very heavy for a preview, so the camera will be very difficult to rotate and move around.
Therefore, to work with the scene in DAZ Studio, I recommend to you disable visibility for LOD2 and LOD3 while working. Also, you can open LOD1 and disable any other objects to increase the speed for camera. But to check the intersections with your other objects and plants of the scene, periodically turn on/off LOD 2 and 3. And of course turn on everything before the render.
If you have difficulty with the light, you can always use the light setting that comes with the scene: Secluded Island -> Iray Light -> Secluded Island Iray Sun-Sky Only.
And one more thing, the rendering in the preview window and the final rendering (Ctrl + R) is different in quality. Render by Ctrl + R is better.
Hi Andrey,
I'm having a problem with the Iray Sun-Sky. I'm not sure if it is loading. When performing a render, the sky is transparent. I put a sky dome in and of course everything went black. I'm doing this in the final rendering as the preview window looks good.
Sun-sky provides illumination, it doesn't provide a realistic sky backdrop.
I was disappointed in this set. It is indeed a memory hog. I had to run texture minimized on it but it is rather dark for a sunny beach scene.
Here's a question... are the textures in png or jpg format? I'm finding a lot of content I struggle to render, the PA uses the png format.
If this is the case, one option, depending on the work you are willing to put in, is to convert all the textures to jpg and use those. But that can be... really time consuming, depending.
Edit: I checked the file list and no, it's jpg. Huh. Don't know what to tell you, then; maybe try some of my free shaders to fill in stuff that doesn't need the detail.
